Q: Different results on Watch activity app since changing phones

Last week, when my iPhone 5 died, I paired my Apple Watch to my corporate iPhone 5s. Since then, I've had wildly different results in my activities.

For instance, I used to generally get 67-74 calories burned per mile when walking briskly with "Outdoor Walking" running on the watch. Since switching to the iPhone 5s, the watch is reporting 67-72 calories burned in just 0.6 miles. I've walked several times with the watch since I switched phones, so it should be calibrated.

Previously, my goal was to burn 800 calories per day, something that would occur by early evening. I'm about to break that now and it's only 3pm -- and I've not worked out that much today.

Has anyone experienced such a fluctuation in the Apple Watch results after switching to a different iPhone? Any insights?

The 5s has the extra motion co-processor which is supposed to be more senstive and accurate when it comes to measuring movement. It's better able to distinuish between walking, running and driving, for example (not, judging by some users' expeience, that it's absolutely perfect).

It would make sense, therefore, that there would be some difference between the measurements recorded compared to the 5, but the differences you're quoting seem high. I've experienced differences (not quite as big) when I've had to re-pair my watch and phone a couple of times (I have betas the phone, so it sometimes needs to be restored).

One of your difficulties is that you can't tell which set of measuements is the more accurate - typical calorei burn rates per mile are in the 70-90 range, depending on weight, speed, terrain. So it seems the 5 was low and the 5s is high

Possible ways to deal with this are:

    1. Continue to calibrate with the phone, and see whethr the numbers start to refine

    2. Unpair, re-pair and start calibration again, and see whether that makes a difference

I can't say whether either will work.

You could call Apple support and see whether they're able to provide any better information
