Thunderbolt Display charging dock

My display charging connector is too large (in length) to fit into the magsafe connector on my mid 2012 MBP 15".

Is it possible to carefully file it down to the fit size? I know there is no magsafe 2 to magsafe 1 connector, which begs the question - "why not".

The pins appear visually to be identical in both connectors, so I assume they would be backwards compatible.

As a pensioner I cannot afford to upgrade the MBP - I have done my own upgrades and it is now (at 2.6Ghz core i7

with a 512 Gb SSD new battery) the same specs as the current MBP.
