Changing .txt file to PDF

I have a file that I need to open in iannotate. It was sent to me through gmail in a .txt file format. I need to convert it to a PDF and then be able to open it in iannotate. I've tried choosing the print option and saving it as a PDF but it didn't work. I do not have much technological experience and really need help with this one!

iPad 2, iOS 8.4.1

This will do it but it is a round-about way. I have both Pages and Adobe Reader installed on my iPad Air. Adobe Acrobat Reader is free through the App Store. Pages is free if you purchased your iPad 2 after Sept. 1, 2013. Otherwise there is a fee for it, I believe $9.99 but not sure. With those Apps installed you can convert a .txt to a PDF as follows:

In Gmail open you xxx.txt file, click on the up arrow box at the right and open the file on Pages.

Once it is on Pages, open the xxx.txt file and on the upper menu click on the up arrow box.

Select Open in Another App, select PDF, and then choose Open in Adobe Acrobat.

You will now have it on PDF format.

The above is how it works on my iPad Air. I don't have iAnnotate so you would have to take it from there.

Hope it works in for you.

Textedit (the reader portion) comes standard on iOS 8 but you mentioned above that it did not work for you. It does not work for me either (iPad Air), I can certainly open a xxx.txt file with it, but the Print option does not give me the option to save it as you also encountered. I understood as well that you wanted to do this all within the iPad and thus my recommendations above for a workaround. The steps I listed in my first post will work within the iPad and if you have Pages already, they will be readily feasible. If not, Pages will be a small investment, Pages came with my Air and I find it very useful. You also mentioned that you did not have “much technological experience”, not a concern at all, thus my detailed steps for the workaround above.

There is an easier way perhaps if you don’t have Pages on your iPad and you have ready access to a Mac or a PC, not what you asked but just in case.

On a Mac, with Pages installed (likely), go to your Gmail and download xxx.txt to your desktop.

Right click it, Open with, Pages.

Select File from the menu above, Export to, PDF

Click Next and Export to your Desktop.

You have now converted your xxx.txt to a xxx.pdf file which you can email to yourself and open in iAnnotate on your iPad.

On a PC, with Office installed (likely), download xxx.txt to your desktop as well.

Right click it, Microsoft Word (if Word does not show up click on Choose Default Program).

From the menu on the left, select Save As.

Under Save as type, scroll to find PDF (there will be many options there) and then click Save.

As above you have now converted the file to a PDF which you can email and handle as per above.

Cheers….

elcpu - Your answers were very helpful. All worked fine except when I tried to send the converted PDF document from my desktop to my email, it wouldn't show up in my email. I'm sure it has something to do with gmail vs the annoying email that comes with the MAC but that would probably involve a whole other list of things to do from different programs that I probably wouldn't understand. In the meantime, I REALLY need to get this document open in innotate because I have a client waiting for it. Thanks for all your help, however!!

My pleasure... One more quick thing to try. Instead of opening the email you sent from your Mac on your iPad Mail App please do this. Open a Safari page on your iPad, since you have Gmail search for mail.google.com Then open your email from there. I suspect you will now be able to see the file you attached from your Mac. If not there was some difficulty with the attachment. Post back and I will follow up. We will get it.....
