Q: Seems cumbersome to have to buy adapters to carry with this lovely supportable device

About AirPrint - Apple Support
That way, the printer can deal with its own power needs, and the MacBook Air does not get drained.

USB-only printers are pretty much ancient history. For future purchases don't consider anything other than AirPrint.
