New backup to a new disk through Time Capsule

I am making a backup to new disk through Time Capsule. I am connecting a 3 TB drive to the TC for backups for my 960GB MacBook Pro. Will normally use wireless for hourly backups for my MacBook Pro. Can I use a USB cable for initial backup and then switch to wireless? I am using the drive on the TC for backups for another Mac.
