Slow Unresponsive MacBook Pro

I have been having an incredibly slow to do anything MacBook. The Spinning Beach ball for everything - opening programs, clicking on anything - etc

Very frustrating:-

OSX - 10.10.5 - Yosemite

4GB - 1600 MHz 3DDR - Memory

498gb - 89.93 gig Free - (153gb - Audio / 100gb - Photos / 66gb movies / 32gb apps)

- 70 mins phone call with Apple - to be fair were good - Carried out:-

Adware Medic Scan (Clear - I already had this etc) - Delete Cache / library / cookies / launch agents - Disk Utilities & a PROM reset.

All took so long with the slowness of the mac etc. Advice was to do a Time Machine Back up - The reinstall OSx

- Time Machine back up took 36 hours to complete

- Reinstall OS X Yosemite - Took 16 Hours

On completion the start up screen looked like this:-

User uploaded file

The Macbook is marginally quicker, but still slow, still exceedingly frustrating

Can someone please help?

Kind regards

Make a "Genius" appointment at an Apple Store, or go to another authorized service provider. You may have to leave the machine there for several days.

Back up all data on the internal drive(s) before you hand over your computer to anyone. There are ways to back up a computer that isn't fully functional—ask if you need guidance.

If privacy is a concern, erase the data partition(s) with the option to write zeros* (do this only if you have at least two complete, independent backups, and you know how to restore to an empty drive from any of them.) Don’t erase the recovery partition, if present.

Keeping your confidential data secure during hardware repair

Apple also recommends that you deauthorize a device in the iTunes Store before having it serviced.

*An SSD doesn't need to be zeroed.

MacBook Pro issues

So to recap:-

I Had a few weeks of Incredibly Slow to do anything - Spinning beach ball for everything!!!!!!

(1) 70mins apple tech support –

adware medic scan (already had from apple forum, scan clear) - delete cache/ library / cookies / launch agents - disk utilities - PROM reset

Advice:- time machine back up / reinstall operating software

36 hours to carry out first time machine back up of 488gig

16 hours to reinstall OS X Yosemite

Still Slow ….

(2) Completely ERASE macbook pro – Back to as purchased

Reinstall OSX – froze for 24hrs on –Set up Mac

(3) 30Mins Apple Tech – Reset the systems controls (shift/Ctrl/Alt/power 3secs)

Computer now as purchased – blank canvas –

Still remains slow / spinning beach ball

(4) Apple Genius Bar Appointment … I couldn’t make a reservation as always fully booked, this was a pain as it is a 100 mile round journey to the store.

But took Apple tech phone support and turned up at the Apple store on opening time. 9am. Walk in appointment made for 1130.

  • Genius Bar plugged the macbook pro in, within 6 mins of test …
  • Block test revealed – Hard Drive Failed – New Hard Drive £106

This was fitted that day … but due to child care arrangements I couldn’t wait to pick the machine up.

(5) 100 mile round trip to collect machine – At genius Bar, MacBook appeared to be working.

At home it soon became clear that the machine was still slow, unresponsive, and very frustrating to use, almost impossible to function progs properly – then on powering up the macbook pro I got a grey screen with a folder and a question mark.

(6) 100 mile round trip back to Apple - Genius Bar – walk in appointment. Fixed there and then – Apparently a loose wire connecting new Hard drive and dust. At the genius bar, macbook pro appeared to be working

Took Macbook home – as soon as I powered up – Machine upresponsive when trying to open progs – upon a restart – back to grey screen with a folder and a question mark.

(7) So my forth 100 mile round trip to Apple store – genius bar at 9 am to attempt to get a walk in appointment as appointments for genius bar were booked up for two weeks. Unbeknown to me, it was the launch day of iphone 6s (Iknow, how did I not know this – well owning an iphone 6, I wasn’t quite ready for a new phone).

I was told that they could not facilitate me due to the launch of the iphone launch and that I would have to book an appointment and have a consultation at the genius bar. This particular member of staff was the one that actually fitted the hard drive, I explained all the above to him and he just apologized and said we would love to help but it will have to be through an appointment next week. Explained my many journeys, the fact that I was hear yesterday bla bla bla, all fell on deaf ears.

Not been one to complain and cause confrontation, I left the Apple store furious inside, dejected and utterly let down by the company. After a moments pause .. I returned to the store and asked to see the manager, a few of the staff in there recognized me through my many visits in close succession etc.

Within minutes I had a Manager and A genius Bar Technician going though the history of the problems and a promise to repair. The tech guy found the problem straight away. In actual fact it was a faulty wire, not a faulty hard drive. I had a refund for the hard drive and the replacement wire fitted.

(8) Finally my macbook is back to good working order:-

  • after a 2 month time line –
  • Countless hours researching problems online
  • 400 miles
  • 100 minutes phone calls to apple tech
  • 52 hours – back up / reinstall
