iMessage not working after 10.10.5 update.. HELP!

Hello,

When I bring up the message application it only allows me to send a text message and not an iMessage. Also when I goto the hand off icon on the lower right of the doc for the message/chat it brings up the message window and it shows the person I am messaging with, but does not show any of the content of the message and there name is in green (for text only) not blue for iMessage, and the person I am messaging with on my phone has iMessage and I can send iMessages to and from them on my iPhone. But not on the my MacBook Pro. When I goto start a new conversation and goto input the persons name in the to box, it will bring up they and number and show that it would be an iMessage being sent, but when I select it it changes green and show it will be sent as a text message.

I have tried the above with the .plist troubleshooting, and that did not work. I have also tried logging out of all my devices on iCloud, and iMessage and then logging back into all of them.

OS X Yosemite 10.10.5

Thank you in advance for any solutions.

Please try this solution suggested by another ASC member:

Go on your iPhone. Settings> Messages > Text Message Forwarding > .... Turn it OFF. Exit settings. Re-Enter Settings> Messages > Text Message Forwarding >.... Turn it ON. (You must have iMessage open on your mac) It will say that it needs an access code from your mac. You should see a pop-up in iMessage with a code. Enter that code into your iPhone. Close Settings. Close iMessage on Mac. Restart iMessage on Mac.

iMessage on my mac says every contact is not re...

Do a backup.

Quit the application.

Go to Finder and select your user/home folder. With that Finder window as the front window, either select Finder/View/Show View options or go command - J. When the View options opens, check ’Show Library Folder’. That should make your user library folder visible in your user/home folder. Select Library. Then go to Preferences/com.apple.iChat.plist and com.apple.imagent.plist. Move the .plists to your desktop.

Restart the computer, open the application and test. If it works okay, delete the plists from the desktop.

If the application is the same, return the .plists to where you got it from, overwriting the newer one.

Thanks to leonie for some information contained in this.

Humm,

Not really related to the Original Question but I can see the link.

Facebook Chat IDs are different to the basic Email ID you get when you register. (You have to Enable Chat at Facebook and get the additional ID).

Is that Facebook Chat ID linked to the Facebook settings in System Preferences > Internet Accounts (I don't use Facebook so I am flying blind) ?

I did have s similar issue with the way I had set up Messages (My Original Apple ID) and the way it changed after and Update (to the @me.com variant I got when I joined iCloud).

In System Preferences I had to Sign Out of one Apple ID (My Original) and then in again with the iCloud Issued @me.com

I could then enter the Original Apple ID as the iMessages ID in the Messages App (It does not have to be "The" iCloud one).

Is something similar happing with the two Facebook IDs ?

Hi,

It would not be my first choice.

IN the Preferences > Accounts the presumption is the account is "Enabled" via the tick box.

The only indication after this that you have logged in is the ability to send iMessages.

If every Contact turns red then you are not logged in on the Mac.

I would try Unticking the Enable box and then Quitting Messages before restarting it again and Enabling the iMessages account (Similar to Linc's resetting the Text Forwarding Link bit for the actual ID)

If that does not work use the Sign Out button and Quit the app before restarting it and Adding back the Apple ID and Password.

If that does not work then go to the .plists and delete the com.apple.ids.service.com.apple.madrid.plist one.

In Restarting Messages you will have to re-enter the Apple ID and accept the pop ups about what other devices are using.

Well I was on the phone with Apple two days ago, and they escalated up the ladder and did a bunch of diagnostic things that they ran on my Macbook. They then had me email all the diag files, and whala... two days later my iMessage's are working...

My guess is Ralph is spot on that the iMessage server needs to be reset for the specific apple id that is having issues.

So I would recommend calling apple right away if anyone else is having this issue.

Thanks for the help everyone!

Hi,

Ok If you have issues with iMessages turning every Contact red and you have tried deleting the madrid .plist in an effort to force the app to make the iMessages account refresh it's login but it has not worked you could try two more things.

Safe Boot

Start in Safe Boot and then use your Mac Account like normal and try Messages and the iMessages account.

If it does work reboot normally and try again.

If that does not work Reset the NVRAM How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Both these actions clear some caches that a normal restart will not do.

If that does not work use the Apple Icon Menu top left > About this Mac.

In the Overview tab in Yosemite or El Capitan the Serial Number should be visible.

If it is not then visit an Apple Store and have it put back.

It can get missed when a logic/mother board is repaired/replaced.

Apple Authorised Service Providers (AASPs) are an alternative.

It that fails or the Serial Number is there then you will have to Contact Apple Support.

You have an Apple ID issue with the the Mac's use of the Apple ID only with the iMessages server.

You will need to explain this (Apple ID issues are free to fix).

Most likely you will have to ask to be bumped to a Level 2 person.

Back at OS X 10.8.2 update is when the Serial Number was used in conjunction with the Apple ID and password to create a device specific login.

At that point the Level 2 people would reset the Server and your ID themselves.

Now it is a long process as they try to establish what has triggered this "Security feature". That might involve the Engineers as well and some data gathering. (we have not discovered as set of words that make this go any quicker).

If you are polite but insistent that it needs to be fixed/reset now they will say it takes 24 hours but is normally reset overnight.
