I wanted to put the dropbox icon on my desktop, so I dragged it out of Finder. It disappeared. It appears in applications, but I cannot open. It is not in my trash. Where is it?

I suspect that what you did was remove the Dropbox folder from the Finder Sidebar.

If you moved it out of the Finder Sidebar and want to put it back, you can open Finder and type Dropbox into the Finder search box. When you find it you can then drag it back into the Finder Sidebar.
I dragged dropbox out of finder (to desktop) and it disappeared?!
