Apple Event: May 7th at 7 am PT
I have a new imac retina 27 inch computer, bought the external optical drive from Apple, although i see it on the list of devices can't seem to get cd to connect, just won't go in completely. Do i need to do anything to be able to use this superdrive.

It is defective if DVDs and CDs won't go all the way in. Exchange it for a replacement or better yet ask for a refund and buy a Mac compatible LG DVD/CD drive.
If the drive can be seen in Finder it should work okay. Have you tried another CD or DVD to test, it could just be the CD you selected is damaged in some way. Look on the CD for smudges, scratches, or any other physical anomalies.
