Import problems into FCE with canon vixia hf600

Is there a way for a Canon Vixia r600 camera to import into FCE 4. When I try I just get a usb connection icon on the screen and no "untitiled" icon on the desktop. It opens up Iphoto, but I can't Log and Transfer in FCE. But if I take the card out, put the it in a canon r500 it will work. My students are doing the importing I would rather not have them moving the cards around.
