10.10.5 update stole my computer sounds

I updated to 10.10.5 from the App Store a few days ago, but I've noticed that my computer makes no sounds when I put something in the Trash Can or empty it, or when I download anything — normally I get a *ding* to let me know it's done, but now I don't. I get sound through the speakers fine, and when I use my headphones as well, but otherwise, nada. Is this a problem other people are having as well, or am I the lone nut? Any and all help would be appreciated.

MacBook, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Basically, what I've done so far is check to make sure the volume is working, that the box next to "Play user interface sound effects" was checked, and that there was nothing wrong with the speakers. After I saw your question, I ran Disk Utility to Verify Permissions, and there were a few things to be fixed — however, the first note in the log read this: "Warning: SUID file “System/Library/CoreServices/RemoteManagement/ARDAgent.app/Contents/MacOS/ARDAg ent” has been modified and will not be repaired."

I have no idea what that is or what it means.
