Q: problems importing iphoto library
I am having trouble importing my iphoto library into Photos. I just upgraded from 10.9 Mavericks to 10.10 Yosemite. On Mavericks, I was running iPhoto 9.5.1, so I should have been able to import my iphoto library into Photos without using the iPhoto Library Upgrader (Get started with Photos for OS X - Apple Support). However, when I went to import my library into Photos, it was grayed out and unable to open. Now, the one twist here is that I don't keep my iphoto library in Pictures; instead, I store it on an external drive to save space on my hard drive (I have a 2012 MacBook Air with a 128 GB hard drive). So. Is there anything I can do to get my iphoto library back? Can I continue to store it on an external drive?
More broadly, I am very very very worried about the lack of compatibility between Mavericks and Yosemite. For apple applications like Photos and Keynote, 10.9 and 10.10 appear to be as incompatible as Mac and Windows. If Apple is moving towards a philosophy where they control how I upgrade and customize my computer, then I will definitely have to end my time as a Mac user.
