My iPhone 3GS opened up from the top by itself. The support staff at the store told me that its because the battery is solidified and there is nothing much they can do. There is no accidental damage, and apple staff at the store agreed. It was a natural death of the phone, but I feel that I should be compensated in someway,because I did not do anything to break the phone.

Since Apple is not here, you are going to have to call AppleCare at 800-275-2273 and take it up with them.
You do realize how old the iPhone 3GS is and that it is well past its warranty date. Whether you believe you should be compensated or not, the warranty has expired and you are on your own. The device has died. That is expected in electronics, especially for something released in 2009.
