How do I check the status of a download in real time on my 2015 macbook pro, i.e. percent complete and rate?

Depends on the app you are using to download. Safari? App Store?
There are only estimated times remaining for each, extrapolated from the time required to download data already received.
The Network tab of Activity Monitor shows data transmission rates, but it can only show aggregate network activity.
Thanks. I was talking about Safari. I found the little icon in the top right of the safari window that shows the download status information I was looking for, when downloading from Safari. What is the "Activity Monitor". I can't seem to find it..?
Activity Monitor is an application which can be found by opening APPLICATIONS>UTILITIES. Or use Spotlight to find it.
