Having issues with OS X 10.6.8 after updating third party addons

I am currently running OS X 10.6.8 on an iMac and run games like Bioshock, Minecraft and X-Plane 10 and have had no problems or crashes for years.

Recently I broke the golden rule and updated Windows media player, Flash and Google Earth in short succession and now I find that after playing more recent games offline they crash to a black screen with the sound frozen at the moment of freeze. The only way to get out of this condition is to force re-boot the mac.

Older games like Tomb Raider 2 will run all day without crashing and so will surfing the internet or watching YouTube videos run for hours without any crashing. It is only modern games that crash. All of these games ran with 100% reliability before.

I have since removed Adobe Flash and Windows Media Player etc without results.

Have you removed Google Earth?

Try a restart.

Do a backup, using either Time Machine or a cloning program, to ensure files/data can be recovered. Two backups are better than one.

Try setting up another admin user account to see if the same problem continues. If Back-to-My Mac is selected in System Preferences, the Guest account will not work. The intent is to see if it is specific to one account or a system wide problem. This account can be deleted later.

Isolating an issue by using another user account

If the problem is still there, try booting into the Safe Mode using your normal account. Disconnect all peripherals except those needed for the test. Shut down the computer and then power it back up after waiting 10 seconds. Immediately after hearing the startup chime, hold down the shift key and continue to hold it until the gray Apple icon and a progress bar appear. The boot up is significantly slower than normal. This will reset some caches, forces a directory check, and disables all startup and login items, among other things. When you reboot normally, the initial reboot may be slower than normal. If the system operates normally, there may be 3rd party applications which are causing a problem. Try deleting/disabling the third party applications after a restart by using the application un-installer. For each disable/delete, you will need to restart if you don't do them all at once.

Hi Eric

I tried all of the above with no joy, everything that I added recently including google earth was removed.

It looks like I have two choices, either I update to Yosemite or I do a compete re-install of Snow Leopard and my modern games.

the problem is that I live 90km from Sydney with dinosaur age internet speeds (280kb /sec) so downloading Yosemite would take forever.

If I re-install Snow Leopard I will be stuck with 10.6.2 version as I don't think I can still upgrade to 10.6.8 anymore.

Thanks anyway for your reply

Alan
