Macbook pro shuts off when streaming video

I've recently upgraded my mid-2010 macbook pro from Snow leopard to Yosemite. Since then my macbook shuts off when streaming videos - netflix, youtube, etc. but only if the power cord is not connected. Since I've also been having other minor issues I decided to format the hard drive and install Yosemite again (I haven't restored any data from time machine yet), but the problem persists.

Any ideas?

Hi! Try Safe Boot:

- Shut down your Mac

- Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button

- Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key

- Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign

- After your Mac boots up, restart it as you usually do.

If this doesn't help, follow the instructions below:

- Shut down your Mac

- Wait until your computer turns off and after that press the Power button

- Right after you hear the startup tone, press and hold the Shift key

- Release the Shift key when you see a grey Apple sign and the progress bar below this sign

- Once you see Desktop, start a Disk Utility scan to detect and repair file system errors (don't forget to choose your main hard drive)

- Click on Verify Disk and then, if asked to fix problems, on Repair Disk

- After this, click on Verify Disk Permissions and then on Repair Disk Permissions

- After the process is finished, shut down your Mac and turn it back on after about 30 seconds

Apart from that, take a look at this Apple article and follow the instructions on Resetting NVRAM shown there: How to Reset NVRAM on your Mac - Apple Support

Try resetting the System Management Controller: https://support.apple.com/en-us/HT201295

Run this test and post its results here.

Hope this helps!

Thank you for your response!

I forgot to mention this in the first post but after the clean install I still had my Safari bookmarks, and a couple of days of browser history, did I not do it right?)

But here is what happened when trying your advice:

Booted up in safe mode - macbook was really slow, the screen what kind of half white when booting up, like the screen couldn't keep up... I couldn't stream netflix, and youtube was running very slowly.

I booted up normally and the macbook ran netflix for 20-30 min before shutting down (that's the longest it's gone for a long time)

Verified disk permissions and got SUID file was modified but not repaired, apparently that is normal?? - didn't help

Reset NVRAM - didn't help

Reset SMC - didn't help :-(

Ran the test, and here is the result

Problem description:

If the power cord is not attached, Macbook pro shuts down when streaming video, netflix, youtube etc.
