how to backup a disabled iphone

is there a way to BACKUP a disabled phone.

the message on the iphone reads [ iPhone is disabled .. connect to iTunes ]

now in iTunes even though it picks up the phone,.. clicking on the "backup now" button requires a passcode.

BUT where does one enter the passcode!.... because the screen only shows the same message [ iPhone is disabled .. connect to iTunes ]

any help would be appreciated
