Must restore both iPod nano and iPad to sync

Lately I have had to "Restore" both my iPod nano and iPad in order to transfer new podcasts and videos to the devices from iTunes. This problem has emerged only in the last couple of months. Is there some way to avoid having to restore these devices in order to delete old material and add new stuff?

I have a Mac Powerbook 15" from late 2008, under OS 10.6.8, 2.4 GHz Intel Core 2 Duo, 6 GB RAM, 240G SSD running iTunes 11.4 (18)

The iPod nano is 8 GB clickwheel variety, 3rd generation. iPad2 is 64 GB running under iOS 8.4.1
