microphone not working

Although System Preferences sound input for the iMac's internal mic are set at 75% of max volume, the input level indicator does not light up as it should. Also FaceTime connections receive no audio. How might this be resolved?

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), 3.4 GHz Intel i7, 16 GB DDR3

Try restarting in the Safe Mode, this will reset some caches. It is possible one or more of yours is corrupt. You can start in Safe Mode by holding down the Shift Key on startup until the computer restarts, after it has restart normally and test. Finally verify your System Preferences are correct.

BTW, do you have any antivirus, cleaning, or third party maintenance software installed on this machine??

Not likely however it has been known to cause some issues on occasion. To be safe uninstall it, you can always re-install later. Try the Safe Mode reset and test, if that does not work create a new user Account (TEST ACCOUNT) and test in that account. If everything works as it should in the TEST ACCOUNT that points the finger to your normal user account and indicates the system does not have a universal problem.

Of course look for the obvious too, unplug all peripherals except the mouse and keyboard and test. Check System Preferences to see that a setting hasn't been incorrectly set. Check the volume setting on the keyboard....
