Apple publishes the operating temps, please Google your model's system specifications and you will find it. Something like 2006 20" iMac System Specifications should get you what you are looking for.

Thanks! Took a look at the specs Apple provides. Optimal temp: 50-95ºF.

Next Q: Temp is rising as high as 140ºF with fan at 1200 rpm or so.

I use smcFanControl, but haven't cranked it all the way up. I was told this would burn out the fan.

I'm not gaming or using big graphics files. Just basic word processing, email, spreadsheets, Internet use (Chrome browser -- as of late, Safari is not cooperative. It was my default for years.)

The computer is laboring -- lots of spinning beachballs.

The HD has a capacity of 499 GB. 390 GB are available.

Any idea what's up?

140F is pretty cool.

iMac (Late 2006) - Technical Specifications

Operating temperature: 50° to 95° F (10° to 35° C)

45°F over optimal "cool"? Well I guess compared to what they would read if one had just finished compressing a 3 hour video!

For what it is worth my computer (older PPC) doesn't have a CPU temp. monitor but it does report hard drive temperatures. When it's 80°F in my room they run about 120°F. Right now it's 75°F in my room and they are reporting 102°F.

What is the maximum safe ºF temperature and fan rpm for an iMac desktop 6,1 Intel 2 duo core?
