How Do You Create Custom Instrument Icons in 10.2?

Now that this functionality has been restored, I would like to create custom icons in Logic X.

I cannot find the instruction in the new 10.2 Manuals or by searching help. The closest info I can find is on pg 373 under "Changing Icon"

I see that the pop-up window has this option:

You now see a "Custom Icons" tab and a big "+". But before I go forward I want to know the EXACT procedure and options, if any.

Thanks!!!

Thanks for the response. Sorry it took so long to reply. Read the Logic Pro Help post and I do follow the Forum. Apple has modified it's icon structure. Previously Icons were 5-layered TFFs at different resolutions. Now they are 3 layer TIFFS at different resolutions. My guess that the Logic X team at Apple created a script that takes image files and formats them to TIFF's within a limited range 000-099. Right now, it appears that there is a limit of 99, but I have not tested that limit. I like to use custom icons to indicate either the instruments, microphones, iOS app or technology used on the track. I also use them for templates that I've created. Here's where I am now:

Thanks for the response. Interesting. Got some curiosity questions:

1. How many total custom icons do you have? 20, 30, more than 99? Right now, I'm at 99, as you can see.

2. Have you replaced any Logic standard icon - e.g., Logic's "Liverpool Bass"? If so, what happens/ed?

  • does the new image get added to your custom tab, while the original remains in the bass tab? Or does it disappear?
  • if so, afterwards, what's the total amount reached by your custom tab? [maybe you haven't got that many yet] or...
  • do some custom images disappear after, say 99 added images

When you open Logic create a new project the default track is an electric piano. What happens if someone takes a file from their finder and puts it on the track - what happens to the default MIDI icon?

The reason I'm asking this stuff is to try to determine behaviors of the custom icon option, to see if there really is a limit of 99 custom images. Would be interested in any info.

Thanks!!

Thanks for the input. I've seen the file browse popup. What I'm looking for is specific directions.

The following may bore you, but here goes: Starting with Logic X (vs Logic 9, where icon customization was much easier using png files), Apple changed the way that Icons are designed and formatted and stored. Technically, the newer icons are 5 layered TIFF files. Now, apparently, Apple is saying that you can create your own icons using your own image files. That's great. I want to know the particulars of the file, the display, storage, editing, etc.

After searching around a little, I found this Link which has a whole bunch and you can just drag and drop them as needed.

Also, I learned that there is a limit to 100 (0-99) custom Icons allowed,

And you can Drag/Drop png’s too.

As far as all the technicalities go, OSX /Logic seems to do the conversion automatically, because if (after you Drag & Drop at least one Jpeg) you go to User/YourName/Music/Audio Music Apps/Custom Icons, you will see that your Jpeg is now a tiff, and it’s all Done.

Perhaps someone else will chime in with additional technicalities.

I guess you could try to drag your own tiff’s into that folder but Logic may or may not like that.

Have Fun.

Well, I don’t “Know” personally, but I got it from this thread discussing the problem.

I don’t claim to be an expert and just sharing my experience.

I have a very good respect for the people posting their comments.

Have you tried to insert any tiff’s into that folder and do they show up in Logic ?

I truly hope there is no limit, although, for me it’s not really that important.

It may be some kind of internal data base routine inside Logic that controls things.

Very interesting Russell - kinda an animal, insect, naked lady (?) thing going there. I noticed that you also added a world instrument icon or two that wasn't represented by Logic - e.g., Tabla. Same as me. Nice Sitar - more detailed than the Logic standard one.

I had been writing Apple for years on this subject, esp after they moved to Logic X and made it harder to customize tracks. I suggested that they simply write a script/macro that auto formatted files for users and it appears that that's exactly what they've done - it appears activate when you drag/drop to the Custom tab. The file is formatted, assigned a file number. If you remove a file that Logic has formatted and reinsert that same file it has worked fine. Otherwise no. If you remove files it will assign/re-assign available Customicon_000's numbers. When I have time I will see if there truly is a limit (probably is) and request allotting more numbers in an update. But this little option is great news for Logic fans. A small part of what makes Logic cool to use.
