There's a help document about that issue but you really don't need it because you really don't want to do what you are doing unless you want iTunes to wipe the content off your devices and also possibly stop you from doing certain things with your online iTunes Store account for 90 days.
Provided both iPods used the same cable and your iPod works OK then
- Inspect the dock connector on the iPod for bent or missing contacts, foreign material, corroded contacts, broken, missing or cracked plastic.
- Make an appointment at the Genius Bar of an Apple store.
