How come my phone reads that the headphones are plugged in but they are not?

My phone is reading that there are headphones plugged in but there are not. I cannot hear anything unless I put the caller on speaker. I cannot hear anything at all. I've turned it on and off already and updated the software too. Nothing is working and I cannot hear Siri talking.

Hello rebsalt,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

I see from your post that you're not hearing anything through the speaker, including Siri, and you have already updated and restarted the iPhone. There are a few more steps I'd like you to go through in order to troubleshoot this issue, which are outlined below:

  1. Go to Settings > Bluetooth and turn off Bluetooth.
  2. If there's still no sound, connect a headset. If you can hear sound through the headset, remove it and clear any dust or debris from the headset jack of your device.
  3. If the device is in a case, make sure that the case doesn't block the speaker.
  4. Use a brush to gently clear any debris from the speaker and Lightning connector (or 30-pin dock connector). The brush should be clean and dry and have soft bristles.
  5. Update your device to the latest version of iOS.

If you follow these steps and still hear no sound or distorted sound, contact us.
