iPhone in recovery mode

MY iPhone 5 won't turn on and when I held the lock and home button for a long time it said connect to iTunes so I did

now it's in recovery mode and it says I can update or restore. I tried to update it but it didn't work and I do t want to reset it unless I can back it up first or have a way to save my pictures

SO if I click restore will it back up first? Or is there any other way I can save my pictures
