This morning I received a message about a Java update to my already installed Java Runtime. I allowed the update and it failed. I allowed information to be sent to Apple. Later I received a Trojen horse alert. Are the incidents related?

While working in Safari 8.0.8 on my Mac Pro, I received the message that an update to a recently installed Java Runtime Environment Version 8 update 6 (build 1.8.0_60-b27) was available. I allowed the update, but it failed. I allowed information to be sent to Apple. A short time later a Trojan Horse message appeared.

My question: Are these two events related. Should I have allowed the Java update? It looked official.
