How to back up photos to external drive

I have a lot of photos. iPhoto's events made it easy for me to organize them by month (including the photo stream). I would back them up to an external hard drive at the end of each month. I can't figure out how to organize them in the new Photos app to make it easy to export to an external drive. Any suggestions???
