lightning cable not charging from computer

Recently I took an off brand lighting cable and decided I would try to increase its length. Couple of cuts and some solder later its all complete. I plug it into a usb wall adapter and works fine, I call it a day. I comeback and still charges from the wall, but no reaction when plugging it into my computer. Any ideas? Im thinking that there is something wrong with the "data" wire( the one that communicates with the computer) hence why it charges from the wall. If it is that what color coating does that wire have( red, green, white, non protected).
