How do I reassign an external drive that I removed from Time Machine?

I was trying to backup up macbook pro. The external drive I wanted to save to wasn't automatically starting the backup. I removed it with intentions on reassigning it as the source to house the backup data. I can't find a way to reassign the external drive. Any help appreciated.

MacBook Pro, OS X Yosemite (10.10.3)

That statement seems contradictory. Time Machine cannot back up its designated backup destination, but I doubt that is what you are trying to do.

What do you want to do with the external hard disk drive, and how is it connected to your MacBook Pro?
