Q: Totally confused as to what is going on with iTunes.

Most of my music on the mac has been downloaded from CD's not much from iTunes.  I had all my music on playlists in iTunes.   I used to be able to change the playlists that I have on my iPhone, but today I loaded more music to my mac and it at automatically loaded it to my phone, I don't have that much storage on my phone for this!!  I have spent hours on what used to be a simple exercise.  I have switched off iCloud access and thought I had it all fixed when I noticed that I had deleted playlists on my iMac!  Totally frustrated!

Apple you need to do better, I have Apple because "they work together".  This wasn't.

What do I need to do now to keep and change playlists on phone and mac?

MacBook Air, OS X Yosemite (10.10.1)

    Hello Lesley,

Since this post is in the iTunes for Windows forum, I understand that whenever you added content to your playlists in iTunes on your Windows PC, they were automatically synced to your iPhone.  I completely understand how this is a frustrating issue, especially since you've been syncing music to your iPhone before without any issue.  The description of the issue you described indicates you likely have enabled Apple Music with iCloud Music Library, which keeps all of your music synced between your devices automatically.  The good news is that these songs that are uploaded from iTunes to iCloud Music Library are not automatically downloaded, rather they just show they're available to stream or save.

You can save songs, albums, or playlists to listen to when you're not connected to the Internet.* You must save songs, albums, or playlists on each device that you want to use for offline listening.

On your iPhone, iPad, or iPod touch:

    1. In the Music app, find the item that you want to save.
    2. Tap the More Options icon   to the right of the song, album, or playlist name.
    3. Tap Make Available Offline.

Songs and albums appear under My Music > Library. Playlists appear under My Music > Playlists.

Add music from the Apple Music catalog to your library - Apple Support

If you'd like to restore all of your settings to how they were previously, then you will need to first disable iCloud Music Library on your iPhone.  Go to Settings > Music, and then turn off iCloud Music Library.  Once this is disabled you will then be able to sync your music from your computer to the iPhone.

You also mentioned having an iMac as well, did you also disable iCloud Music Library on the iMac?  Doing this would also cause those playlists that were uploaded from your Windows PC to disappear.  All you need to do is enable iCloud Music Library by doing the following:

    1. Make sure that you're signed in to iTunes with the Apple ID and password that you use for your Apple Music membership.
    2. Mac: From the menu bar at the top of your computer screen, choose iTunes > Preferences and turn on iCloud Music Library.
Windows: Press Control + B on your keyboard to open the iTunes menu bar. Choose iTunes > Preferences, and turn on iCloud Music Library.
    3. If you already have music on your device, you'll be asked if you want to Merge or Replace the music. Choose Merge to add the songs currently on your device to your library.* If you select Replace, the music on your device is replaced with your Apple Music library.

Check your Apple Music library settings - Apple Support

    Take care.
