What happens when I try? It stops part way because something is blocking/preventing the disk to go all the way in
That sounds as though the mechandism (arm) directing the media is broken; that is exactly what happened to mine. Fortunately, I was covered by Applecare and the Superdrive was replaced. If you're not under warranty, take it to your nearest Genius Bar for an evaluation; if it needs replacing, you might want to consider getting an external tray loading drive/burner which will be far more reliable.
