Nope iPad doesn't support add drives.

The only thumb drives that will work on an iDevice are drives like the WiDrive, which is a wifi enable thumb drive. It generates its own small wifi network that you connect your iPad to and then use an app to access data.
Generally though, as Maxwill said, your average off the shelf thumb drive does not work with iDevices.
Are there no adapters that would work?
Theoretically you can use the camera connection kit to plug in a thumb drive. But it ONLY works to import photos (you set up your file structure to mimic that of a camera and the iPad thinks it's a camera.). In addition one time when I experimented I had 7 of 14 drives work, so very inconsistent. To the point I say it does not work.
There is ZERO support to import any other type of file. The iPad does not have a 'file manager' system, which is what would be used to see and handle the files on a thumb drive. It's the same premise as putting a blu ray disc into a non-blu ray player. The disc will fit in the tray and go into the machine, but the machine is incapable of reading the disc.
