I can't reinstall os x yosemite after I put back my factory settings

I want to sell my imac so i put back mu factory settings. I wanted to reinstall os x but it says it can not download and i have to check the apple store and try again. But i can't get in the apple store without os x. can someone help me out?

What did you do to get to "factory settings"?
Macs come out of the factory with an installed OS.

If you blanked the drive you will need either:


A) Restore from a time machine or other backup (you did backup, right?)


B) Install from a Yosemite Flash Drive you already have

The first question is, what Mac OS X did your Mac have installed by Apple? If it was Snow Leopard, you need to find the install CD that came with the Mac and use that to install OS X. If it came with Ion or later, restart and hold the Command and Option and R keys so you boot from the Apple servers. You can the go to the Utilities drop down menu and choose Install Mac OS X to install the OS X that was installed by the factory.
