My SD card stopped being read when inserted. In addition I tried a new one and had same issue.
Not sure why?

If you previously yanked the SD card out without a proper eject, it could be corrupted and unreadable. What happens when you attempt to verify disk in Disk Utility First Aid?
As VikingOSX’s post suggests, SD cards are rather fragile so it could be the card is scrambled or dead. If you can test it with another computer or put it into a device that uses SD cards to see if it is readable elsewhere that’s a good first step. Also you can try performing an SMC reset.
