help for ipod

Hi i have an oldish ipod thats from a friend that i am trying to put music on. Ipod tells me there is no music/songs. Yet when i open the device through my computer

all the songs are there. The ipod is also crashing itunes to the extent that i tunes does not open and i have to restart the computer.
