iphone 6 headset jack - stereo headphones?

Hi,

I'm new to iphones so please forgive me if the answer is obvious.

Can I plug normal stereo headphones in to the iphone headset jack?

The jack is made for headphones and a mic - so the connecter is different from plain headphones (3 segments instead of 2).

I just want to be sure I won't short anything out by plugging normal headphones in to this jack...
