Cannot complete Erase Free Space

I have 410 GB of free space on my iMac, having just moved my Photos Library to an external drive. I have been trying to free up space and saw that Erase Free Space can help with this. However when I run it, it always says running out of space on Startup Disk. It runs for about 90 minutes getting slower and slower, gradually taking up all the space on my iMac disk until there is no more space. It then errors due to insufficient space.

'About My iMac' then shows that 'Other' is completing consuming my disk.

How much space does Erase Free Space require to complete?

iMac, Mac OS X (10.7.2), 27 inch - 2011

you appear to have more than enough space to do this, but if your putting files in the trash and erasing them you are reclaiming that space.

the question is why are you doing this. Unless you need to securely delete files so there is no chance to recover them I suggest you read this

if this is what you need to do and it's not working I would disconnect all external devices, then boot into safe mode, then try to erase free space.
