songs I paste to folder Automatically add to iTunes not importing following re-install of my windows os. The songs sit in the folder but do not get imported into the music folder like they used to

Try Repair security permissions for iTunes for Windows. In addition you might want to check the setting of the media folder under Edit > Preferences > Advanced is point to the folder where your Automatically Add to iTunes folder is located.
