"PCL XL error" on HP 1012

I have an HP 1012 printer connected directly to my Mac Pro via USB, and it seemed to have been printing fine just three days ago. I suddenly started getting errors when trying to print to it from any program. At first, the printer icon in the dock would have the little red exclamation point, and then when I tried opening the window and clicking the button to restart jobs, the printer would print this:

PCL XL error
Subsystem: KERNEL
Error: IllegalStreamHeader
Operator: 0x0
Position: 0

What does all this mean? I'm new to Macs, and I've never had this error before. Any help on how to fix it would be very much appreciated!!!

Hi there,

PCL XL is also known as PCL6. I have seen this error when a printer is set to one printer language (PDL) and you are using a driver that is sending data to the printer in another language. Something may have changed with the system configuration, maybe an update or installation of a new application?

I would try deleting the driver from the Printer Setup Utility and then from the Printer Setup Utility menu, selecting Reset Printing System. Once that is done, restart the Mac with the LJ1012 disconnected and then once the Mac is running again, connect the printer and open Printer Setup Utility again to add the printer.

Paul

Thanks. I think this fixed the problem. I do, however, have a lingering driver of some sort after I tried installing and uninstalling a program called Gugenprint... many of my printer drivers now have "CUPS + Gugenprint" at the end of them. Is there a way for me to get rid of this program and have it liberate my drivers?
