as far as i can tell, this response is not relative to my question.
Have you checked, using the search tools on the device, to see if the tracks have in fact already been successfully copied over. It may be that the artist name isn't listed in the device's artists menu for the reasons stated, i.e. all tracks by the artist are marked as part of a compilation.
Other reasons for tracks not syncing are that they are unchecked, or that they are not compatible with the device. Are you able to get other content added or removed from the device, or is it actually failing to update at all?

on of the artists (yaz) i put on my itunes over a month ago. i have
added probably 4 to 5 since then with no problem. i just this week got
another new cd (ellie goulding) and it goes to my itunes just like
normal. after attempting to sync (besides what it does automatically) it
still refuses to add both these artist to my ipod. while this may not
that important a problem, i still want to know why it is doing this and
how to fix it. thanks.
Select one of the tracks of the Ellie Goulding album. Press Ctrl+I to Get Info. On the details tab is an area with the text
compilation ▢ Album is a compilation of songs by various artists
Is the check box ticked?

i really appreciate your help. unchecking that box about the compilation
fixed the problem. thanks again...
You're welcome. 🙂
The Grouping tracks into albums article may also help you fix other inconsistencies in your iTunes library that produce odd results when the tracks are copied to the iPod.
