Kernel Panic 15" Mid-2012 Macbook Pro OS X 10.7.5

Hey Everyone,

Last month my 15" Mid-2012 MacBook Pro received its 1st Kernel Panic. Before it happened, all I did was browse on a webpage on Safari. According to the log, it looks like it is something related with the GPU. However, my GPU is running just fine with no problems (I do a lot of video editing on FCP X and haven't experienced any issues so far).

I'm clueless of what could be causing my Mac to start experiencing KPs. Is this a hardware problem or a software problem? Please let me know if anyone can read this and let me know what's going on.

Thanks!

MacBook Pro, Mac OS X (10.7.5), null

Your problem, hardware or software, may not be exactly the same as that of the original poster of this older thread, and it can be very confusing for everybody if we try to answer more than one question in each thread, which can also result in you applying the wrong advice to your particular problem.

In order for us to give your problem our proper attention to try to solve it, would you kindly start your own thread, describing the trouble you are having in the fullest detail, including completing your details to show what Mac or iDevice you are using, what operating system, and what version of the application in question. Please remember to post in the forum relevant to your hardware or version of OS X. A full list of all the support forums is here:

I'm having what seems to be this exact same issue. Were you able to resolve it?

You are saying all your OS X Lion 10.7 panics have a traceback in the graphic drivers?

If that is the case, then it is possible your graphic chip is failing.

There was a recall for some Macbook Pro models with discrete graphics chips.

You should make a Genius Bar appointment at your local Apple store and have your Mac evaluated.

A workaround for a failing discrete graphics chip in a Macbook Pro is to use gfxCardStatus to force the use of the integrated intel graphics <https://gfx.io/>

Yes, the tracebacks are the same. MBP 10.7.5 on Lion. Since it seems so similar I was just curious what this user had done to resolve it.

It's a used but new machine to me. I have a fresh OS install but used a time machine backup from previous machine (both 10.7.5). My previous machine did not have the GeForce graphics. I am also aware of the lawsuit and logic board issues when it comes to graphics.

So if this user fixed it by disabling the graphics card, or installing a fresh OS without using a time machine backup (some apps messing with this hardware), or apple repaired the graphics/logic board.... I am hoping to approach the issue the same way since it seems the same. There's so many variables, I was hoping to narrow it down to the path this user used.

Hello Caleb,

Thanks for using Apple Support Communities.

Kernel panics can be a difficult and time consuming issue to troubleshoot. The article below can help walk you through the process to determine if the issue is with your hardware, or software.
