Does anyone know if there is a chance that Apple will bring back the old character map? The way it is done now stinks! I really liked when I could click the character map icon and see every character on the keyboard and initiate the alternate characters by manipulating the control, option and command keys.

Open the Keyboard pane of System Preferences, and choose to show both the Keyboard & Character Viewers and the input menu. Select the Keyboard Viewer.

Just to add. If you mean you'd like the Keyboard Viewer to be able to select among your fonts like it used to so it shows the selected font on the virtual keyboard, that's gone. This is the only view you'll get (for the U.S. layout).
