How to Move Old MacBook User Account to a New iMac

Hi,

I have a very old barely functioning MacBook Pro from 1997 running 10.6. I would like to get my user account off of it and copy it to an Imac running Mavericks. I have no idea how to go about this. Does anyone have any suggestions?

Also, assuming I can get the user account transferred, how will I get it open on my new computer? And then how would I go about selecting certain files my old user account and moving into my new user account?
