Q: Windows 10 Boot Camp Partition Won't Boot After Moving to New Mac via Winclone

Hello,

I recently got a new Mac and I'm trying to move my old Windows 10 Boot Camp partition from my old Mac (Mid-2011 MacBook Air, Model Identifier: MacBookAir4,2) to my new Mac (Early-2015, MacBook Pro 13", Model Identifier: MacBookPro12,1). I purchased the newest version of Winclone (5.3) and backed up the image to my NAS drive on my local network. Then, I went to the new Mac, created a new FAT partition in Disk Utility, as recommended by Winclone, copied the image to my desktop on the new Mac, and restored it to the new partition (resulting in an NTFS volume).

I can view the Windows Boot Camp partition in Finder, and access all of the files; however, when I hold down Option upon reboot and select the Windows Boot Camp partition, it just takes me straight into OS X. It doesn't even try to boot to Windows. I'm able to boot into the Windows 10 Boot Camp partition just fine from the old Mac (holding down option while rebooting, and selecting the Windows partition). But, for some reason, it refuses to boot on the new Mac.

Any ideas on how to get a restored Boot Camp partition to boot on a new Mac?

Thanks!

MacBook Pro with Retina display, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5), Boot Camp: Windows 10 Pro

Was there a GPT vs MBR error message when using W10? Can W10 be wiped and re-installed? Can you post the output of

    diskutil list

    diskutil cs list

sudo gpt -vv -r show /dev/disk0

You will prompted for your password, which will not be echoed back to you.

CSRutil (not cstutil) enables or disables System Integrity Protection - About System Integrity Protection on your Mac - Apple Support otherwise also called SIP.

    1. I dont recall a GPT vs MBR error message.
    2. W10 can be wiped and reinstalled, it's a clean install.
    3. Here it is:

    4. I did had to disable SIP to apply the previously mentioned changes to the MBR. I have enabled it again afterwards.

OP was using Winclone, hence my Winclone question. In your specific case, if you run BCA, do you get an option to remove Windows? When you tried to install W10, did you hold the Alt/Option key to select a specific icon from the USB?

    1. When I run BCA, I does preselect the option to remove Windows 7 or later.
    2. I did hold down the alt key to select a partition, and sometimes it list two Windows USB options.. Did something go wrong there?

Did you choose EFI Boot when you installed W10 initially?

I don't recall.. If reinstalling is the best way, that's ok.

If Windows Update was enabled (or defaulted), it downloads Intel drivers which cause a lot of problems on Macs. For example Windows 10 crashing, but not sure why. . If you look at the discussion, can I suggest a re-installation of W10 without a Network connection till fully installed and Windows System Restore point has been created. Then you can test enabling Windows Updates and see if this causes the crashes to re-appear. It will give you the ability to restore without a full re-installation.

I finally got it working! I started with removing and reinstalling Windows (removing partition completely), then paid explicit attention to the drive that I select; the one labelled Windows is the MBR version, the one labeld EFI Boot is the EFI one that's not working on my MBP. Then I created an hybrid MBR following the instructions on www.rodsbooks.com/gdisk/hybrid.html, then the install went all smooth. The EFI boot partition is still there and should never be selected, the MBR one is the one that works. Thanks for your assistance

I have encountered a similar problem. I have El Capitan and Windows 10 on a later-2015 iMac. Windows 10 won't boot via winclone 5. It has 5 partitions. How to make the 5th partition into hybrid MBR?

Please start a new discussion in Bootcamp. Your problem is different. You should not have OSXRESERVED in a Winclone Image. The 16MB part is a Microsoft Reserved part. What is the source Mac model for Winclone?

The mac for winclone is: iMac (21.5-inch, late 2015)

I created a new discussion: Wincloned Windows 10 Boot Camp Partition Won't Boot w OSXRESERVED
