It shuts down with about a third of the progress bar loaded.

and repairing the HD
If it can't be repaired then your HD has failed and has to be replaced.
After replacement you can boot from your install DVD and reinstall OSX.
Also, if you updated the EFI on your Mac
Computers that can be upgraded to use OS X Internet Recovery - Apple Support
then you can instead boot to Internet Recovery to reinstall the OS
