Q: Why no apple help found to replace time machine storage with iCloud???

Found apps to trasfer time machine backup (< 200 GB) to other clouds at good price ($50/yr) but none for transfer to icloud. Considering life of drive (< 10 years) and better security seems that cloud storage would be better/cheaper in the long run. I would prefer to use iCloud. Why no apple provision (e.g., app) for this or where do I find it and why has it been hidden?

Seems to me the best overall backup solution (lowest cost, best security) would be to keep a day or so stored locally (cheap low storage device) and then do a night-time "time machine" backup to the cloud once per day. Am I missing something??

iCloud is not a general cloud storage solution. It is reserved mainly for iOS - contacts, mail, calendars, photos. There are numerous cloud backup/storage solutions that are less expensive than iCloud.

Most people have a data cap on their Internet services.  Using a backup method as you suggest would crush the data plans and cost major money.  There ARE backup services that you can use (Crashplan & Carbonite to name 2), but again, depending on what your monthly cap is, you might find yourself increasing your Internet bill drastically.

None of this makes sense to me.  The "iDrive" competitor of Apple gives you the app to backup to their cloud for free (with super AES security) and offers 1 terabyte for only $29.50 per year.  Apple has the cloud centers to do the same or better and should be able to offer better services/integration across various user devices and across families and friends -- worth more than $29.50 per year.  And they have a big built-in base of users.  The local apple store tech I spoke with does not understand this either.

And re cost of data plans, that comment does not apply to computer users who pay $45 to $60 per month for > 20 Gb/min and streaming volume otherwise unlimited. Since USA is in process of going to the stream for entertainment (and apple is there with Apple TV) this situation is unfathomable.

We need someone from Apple corporate to step into this discussion and explain why they do not want this business.

That's not going to happen. This is a user forum. Apple is not here.
