To Loner T... We were talking earlier about me getting Windows on my Mac Yosemite (2009)...

Hey Loner T,

Our conversation apparently timed out earlier & I wasn't allowed to post any more... I hope you can still help me...I'm SO CLOSE to completing this ongoing nightmare of a task!! As of right now, I've cleared out my "trash" and I still only have 36.82 GB of free space on my start up disc. You suggested I allocate at least 100 GB to Windows when I partition (which is the step I am at...) Is there a way I can use another HD (an external one) to install Windows on? Or does it HAVE to be my internal HD/start up disc??

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

It has to be your internal HD. You can always move OS X and your other files to an external drive without any restrictions. I am surprised that you have close to 400Gb in just OS and Apps. In Finder leave the OS out, and right click on the Documents folder? How much does it occupy? Do you have a large iTunes and/or Media part?

By whom or what?

Hey Loner T,

I'm back! Sorry, I got tied up last night. So, here's what my Macintosh HD folders say:

Library, 5.9 GB: 5,898,988,299 bytes (6.12 GB on disk) for 49,370 items

Users, 516.54 GB: 516,537,539,554 bytes (517.32 GB on disk) for 16,919 items

How do I drill down from here?

I have an external HD that has 1.01 TB of available space. It is formatted as ExFAT (not sure if that matters or not). Should I try to save all of my movies and pictures from my internal HD (under "users") on to this external HD and then delete them off of my Macintosh HD?? I just don't want to lose them permanently of course! So, just let me know if this is what I should do to open up space on my Macintosh HD...
