Q: To Loner T... We were talking earlier about me getting Windows on my Mac Yosemite (2009)...

Hey Loner T,

Our conversation apparently timed out earlier & I wasn't allowed to post any more...  I hope you can still help me...I'm SO CLOSE to completing this ongoing nightmare of a task!!  As of right now, I've cleared out my "trash" and I still only have 36.82 GB of free space on my start up disc.  You suggested I allocate at least 100 GB to Windows when I partition (which is the step I am at...)  Is there a way I can use another HD (an external one) to install Windows on?  Or does it HAVE to be my internal HD/start up disc??

iMac, OS X Yosemite (10.10.5)

Ok, so it kept fluctuating, and now it only says "about 49 minutes".  That makes much more sense!  It's currently copying "117.40 GB of 182.26 GB...

Ok, now it says "about 10 minutes".  So, once that's done I'll go ahead and restart my computer, do the following (that you sent me in a previous message):

    - Disk Utility -> Erase the full disc (the Macintosh HD internal HD)

    - Quit DU

    - Restore from Time Machine Backup

    - Boot OS X Restore, and run BCA

After I've completed all of this, I'll get back to you!

Well crap!  After all that time I got an error message right at the end.  It says "The Finder can't complete the operation because some data in "Namy Wedding" can't be read or written."

Namy Wedding is my sisters wedding, and I guess those photos can't be read or written...?  I can totally delete those photos bc my sister has her own copies.  (Don't even know why they're on my computer.)  Should I do this?  Trash all of those particular photos and then start the copy process from the beginning again???  UGH.

No, you do not need to. Just continue. If the copies are safe, you can boot into Internet Recovery. Please ensure you see a spinning globe. Connect to the outside world via a physical cable. Wireless is slow and can fail more often.

    Ok, couple things...

    - Now, I restart & go to "Disk Utility > Erase the full disc (Macintosh HD internal HD)

    - Then, quit DU

    - Then, Restore from Time Machine Backup (by restarting my computer again, I assume...)

    - Then, "restore OS X" (by once again restarting my computer...?)

    - Lastly, run BCA

Do I have all of this correct?  Also, I can't really connect via a physical cable bc it's in a whole different room than my 50 inch Mac desktop is located.  But, I have a very strong WiFi connection.  So, are these (above) my next steps...??  I'll wait on your go ahead...

Take a look at Recovery link and read the part about Internet Recovery. The disk needs to be erased when you are in Internet Recovery Console.

Which version of OS X is installed by OS X Recovery?

    • If you use the Recovery System stored on your startup drive to reinstall OS X, it installs the most recent version of OS X previously installed on this computer.
    • If you use Internet Recovery to reinstall OS X, it installs the version of OS X that originally came with your computer. After installation is finished, use the Mac App Store to install related updates or later versions of OS X that you have previously purchased.

I want to recover the Yosemite 10.10.5 version that I recently installed, rather than the version my Mac came with.  (It was some 2009 version)  The only options it gives me on the OS X Utilities menu are listed below.  Which should I choose?

    - Restore from Time Machine Backup

    - Reinstall OS X

    - Get help online

    - Disk Utility

This is why we made a Time Machine backup, because it contains your current OS. Select Restore from Time Machine and point to the backup when prompted.

Ok, about to do now.  I'll restart my computer and do "restore from Time Machine Backup" and select my back up disc....which, ironically, is titled "Jess' Bkup"   Be back in a min!

One more question before I restore from TM Backup... Do I still need to erase the entire Macintosh HD using Disk Utility before I restart and attempt to restore??

Yes. Please erase the disk. It helps the Restore be a bit faster.

Ok, about to erase the disk now (I'm nervous!) and then restart, and restore!  Be back once that's done... Wish me luck!

Ok, so I'm stumped (again!)... When I go to DU and click on the Macintosh HD, then "erase" option is grayed out.  So, I can't erase the disc...  What now?

On the lower HD "figure", if you will, (not the one that says the actual GB, but just the one that is the HD image), I do have the option to "erase free space"...but that's it...
