I rented a movie off itunes and it doesnt appear on my apple tv

What did you rent it on ? If your computer's iTunes then you might be able to stream it from that to your Apple TV (rentals are a one-time only download, so will only download onto the computer / device that you rented them on)

You should be able to stream it from your computer to your Apple TV without it being fully downloaded
