I'm having trouble with my storage on my iPod 5. I deleted numerous apps, pictures and all my emails but once they've been permanently deleted I go back to check my storage, there is still a tab remaining that says "Mail - 5 MB" which is preventing me from backing up my data. Why doesn't the space free up?

I think you have problem with icloud storage, not on your device.
yeah, that's what I meant. I deleted all my emails but now the "Mail - 5 MB" still remains taking up my storage so I can't backup anymore. How do I get rid of it?
You can clean out your mail at www.icloud.com by removing all mail from all folders, including trash and "sent".

it may be impossible to clean out completely, even if you go and disable icloud mail in settings - icloud - mail and notes by turning both of those off.
2> 5 megabytes are thousand times less then 5 gigabytes that you get from apple and is unlikely the reason of you not being able to backup. While it is possible - very, very improbable.
