how do i create a word document compatible with microsoft for editing, sending and receiving

i am new to mac. I am having trouble creating a word document with copy, paste, moving text. etc. Also when I open a microsoft word doc on this mac it looks different and when I send a doc from the mac to a PC it won't open.
